Steamer HANALEI: The Hanalei with a cargo of cattle, sheep, pigs, 34 passengers and 26 crew crewmembers came to a crashing stop upon Duxbury Reef near Bolinas, California on November 23, 1914. Alert watchmen at the Marconi wireless station spotted the wreck 300 yards offshore and radioed San Francisco for assistance. Several tugs and the Coast Guard lifeboat from Fort Point raced to the rescue. The Hanalei fired her line gun towards shore but missed. Two seamen dove overboard to swim the line ashore...they drowned in the crashing surf. At 1:30 AM, frustrated rescuers fired a line from the Lyle gun mounted atop a cliff...it too fell short. They then mounted a line gun on a raft maneuvering it through the currents and successfully shot the lifeline to the Hanalei. 23 souls were lost in the disaster.
