Description
This Large Haunting Print is very unusual with a Woman apparently dressed in black in front of a black background. The only color on the print is the woman's face, collar, and hands. The title at the very bottom is "Adorable". The artist's signature in gold is to the right of her clasped hands, but unfortunately it is indistinguishable. I have been unable to find another instance/example of this print on the internet. The frame measurements are: 12-3/4 inches wide by 16-3/4 inches high. The age of this print or the original painting is not readily discernible. This print has been hidden behind a 1914 Baptismal Certificate for many years and I found it by accident at my parent's home where it has been for many years. I took it apart to clean the glass and decided that the print was much more interesting and unusual than the Baptismal Certificate. There is a stamp on the back of the cardboard backing board which reads: Lambert Mirror Works, Inc. - Brooklyn, New York or St. Louis, Missouri. This back board was probably added later when the baptismal certificate was inserted on top of the print. The frame and print are in good condition with only minor ripples on the black background area which probably would disappear with a heavier backboard.I have included the Baptismal Certificate that was mounted at a later date above this print in this sale. It reads:
Edna Marie, child of Mr. Samuel Kiefer and his wife Mary nee Dorman
Born at Piqua, Ohio, April 6th, 1899
Baptized by me at St. John's Lutheran Church, Piqua, Ohio on the 31st day of May in the year of our Lord 1914
by Rev. C.E. Krumm, Ltheran Pastor:
An Evangelical Lutheran Mission first met July 15, 1888 on the second floor of a clothing store on Main Street supported by St John's Lutheran Church in St Paris. Jacob Tschumy and nine other Lutherans formed the core of the new congregation and by March 1890, the congregation organized as St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and called its first minister, Rev. P. S. Swinehart. In 1891, a frame
Gothic
-style church was built at the corner of Wood and Downing Streets on the site of the former Wood Street Cemetery.
The church continued to grow and became self-supporting in 1900. German and English language Sunday schools were merged, a church choir was formed, a women's group, Brotherhood, and a young people's group - Willing Workers were organized. In 1913, the current brick building was formally dedicated at an estimated cost of ,000. Rev. C. E. Krumm was pastor during most of this time with Rev. H. Melcher serving briefly.
