Silas E. Howard was one of the 10 original postmen of Salem, the Capitol of Oregon. He was the son of D.C. Howard who fought in the Union Army during the Civil War and traveled to California and then Oregon after the war during the second wave of The Gold Rush. We have an extensive collection of ephemera, including keepsakes from Silas E. Howard, many more photographs of his 2 families, his father, D.C. Howard's personal civil war journals which will be at auction in the near future, letters from Silas to D.C. after The Civil War and also from D.C.'s wife, Caroline, and many photographs of DC Howard and his family as well as deeds, receipts, etc. We also have items from Silas E. Howard's grandson, Rex Jr's WWII adventures. He was Normandy, The battle of The Bulge, and in a Nazi POW camp. The collection is quite extensive.
Here are the details of Today's package:
(The third and fourth pictures are the flip-side of the 1st photo in the left column, the photo of D.C. Howard & Family circa 1880,  just under the newspaper article.)

Note: Take what is written on postcards and photos with a grain of salt. These notes were written before the age of the Internet, and we are now using knowledge of the full collection of The Howard Family Estate Memorabilia Collection, Silverton, Oregon – plus documents and various websites i.e. newspapers and ancestry sites online to get the most accurate information. Please message us with any comments or questions. This is a work in progress of a vast amount of material dating from before the Civil War to the 1960s.

Side B: D.C. Howard & Family Circa 1900. This is Silas E. Howard's father, D.C. Howard, who fought in the civil war with the OHIO 117th which became the 1st Ohio heavy artillery. He is shown with Silas' daughter Edith, of his first marriage to Emma. Silas married Emma while still living in Oakdale, Nebraska. We don't know the names of the younger girls yet.
Cabinet Photo: Silas & family, Circa 1906

Photo of Clara Howard Circa 1921
One of the many wonderful photos of Clara Howard the youngest daughter of Silas and Jennie. More listings of Clara photos to come!! We can tell she loved to get in front of the camera. D.C Howard and Rex Jr. fought wars to save the world, and their awesomeness cannot be understated...but...Clara Howard is one of our favorite Howards. Stay tuned for more of her delightful photos coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Photo of Theodore Howard Circa 1919
This photo is one of several that we have. Teddy has a collection unto himself that we will list soon. Teddy was a special postal service telegraph messenger at the age of 14. Sadly, he was killed the same year this photo was taken, in a terrible traffic accident.

also short mention in the Butchers' Advocate: Dressed Poultry and the Food ..., Volume 60, Issues 1-25 (google books) and 131 mentions on newspapers online - too much information to include in this listing. In the last picture you can see 2 printouts about the Butcher and his family. I included those 2 papers in the package.

Cabinet photo from “The Elite” Photo Studio, Salem, Oregon: Silas, Wife, Baby.
Circa 1898-9 Names written on back. Silas E. Howard Jennie Howard and baby Rex.
Information on “The Elite” photo studio pending further research. It's a common name and there were several around Oregon and the country. We have been looking up the many many photographers that had these studios in the olden days of photography. This particular one didn't yield any results, but we found some interesting ones for other “cabinet” photos we have in Salem, Portland, Eugene, Astoria, and even Washington D.C. I look up their names at newspapers online. Most of them have a blurb or a box in the paper.

    chipped on top,
